Thomas Bern
Bern took the Comfortinas over from Håkan Södergren and drew them lower and faster — the 35, the 38, the 39, and in 1998 the 42, all built by Comfort Båtar in Arvika. His argument, made in lines rather than in words, is that a boat can be gentle on the eye and merciless offshore: a low coachroof, a moderate and easily-driven hull, an underwater profile that will go to windward all day —forgiving in the fjord, faithful in the fetch.
She is hand-laid glass, round-bilged, with three tonnes of lead in a deep fin keel and a spade rudder hung behind it — which is where the stiffness comes from, and the answer in the helm. The rig is fractional and unfussy: 44 m² of mainsail, a 53 m² genoa that rolls away on its furler, and nothing that needs two people awake. Ocean category, and a four-cylinder Yanmar on a saildrive for the last mile into a harbour.
